Challenge Vichy

Settling back into coaching and training after a big event in France where three athletes I've been coaching did the full ironman distance.  I also took part in the half distance race on the same day.

It was brilliant being there, seeing each one come in - each with their own story and amazing achievements.  Dave will be writing up his account for all to read in the ZigZag Stories section.  As he recounts, he set a personal best time, breaking through the 12 hour mark that he wanted to achieve.

For Gareth it was his first full ironman.  He crossed the line, holding 6 month baby son George, in a very impressive 11 hours 11 minutes.

Ray found it the hardest as the pressures of a new job and lots of travel left him unable to train as much as we'd liked.  Sure enough "the wheels came off" as he said on the marathon but he still made it through to the end in a credible time also under 12 hours.

The event itself was superbly organised.  And just being in deepest France made it extra special.  Highlights include the beautiful rolling countryside, field after field of sunflowers (though all with their heads bowed), villagers along the way cheering, seeing an inspiring South African father and son team (the father towed his disabled son in a kayak, rode him on an adapted bike and run pushing him on a specially adapted buggy).

Amazing achievements all round and a great experience.  (Oh, and I had a great race too!)
